Worn Teeth: Why Grinding Is Only Part of the Assessment
Teeth can wear from several processes, including contact between teeth, acid exposure, and habits involving abrasive materials. Grinding may contribute, but the pattern of wear needs to be evaluated in context.
Share the whole history
Mention jaw soreness, headaches, reflux symptoms, dry mouth, and habits such as biting pens. Tell your dentist whether someone hears grinding during sleep. A history of snoring or daytime sleepiness may also warrant a separate medical discussion. Do not assume every worn surface has one cause.
Match prevention to the findings
A protective appliance may be useful in some cases, while other situations call for changes in cleaning technique, diet, medical management, or restorative care. An appliance cannot rebuild missing tooth structure or treat every sleep condition. Atlantic Dental Associates can assess wear, monitor changes, and explain appropriate options. Photographs or measurements may help track progression over time. Early attention can make it easier to plan care before teeth become sensitive or restorations begin to fracture.
