Whitening Touch-Ups: Review the Product Before Restarting

If you still have whitening gel from an earlier course, do not automatically restart the same routine years later. Your teeth, restorations, and sensitivity may have changed. The product’s storage and expiration also matter, so review it before use.

Bring the details to the conversation

Tell the dentist which product you have, when it was supplied, and whether the trays still fit. Mention new crowns, fillings, recession, or tooth pain. A tray that looks familiar may no longer be appropriate after changes in the mouth.

Avoid self-designed schedules

Do not increase frequency or wear time to compensate for a weaker-looking result. Follow current instructions for the product and seek advice about irritation or sensitivity. If a restoration now differs in shade from nearby teeth, extra bleaching may increase rather than solve the contrast. An examination can help determine whether cleaning, whitening, another treatment, or no cosmetic intervention is reasonable. A touch-up should be a considered part of maintenance, not an assumption that an old supply remains suitable for every later color concern.
