Whitening Around a Single Dark Filling
A dark filling and a stained natural tooth can create a similar visual concern, but whitening treats them differently. Bleaching changes natural tooth color; it does not predictably lighten a filling to match. That distinction matters before you buy a stronger product or repeat treatment.
Identify what is discolored
Ask whether the visible darkness comes from the restoration, the tooth, a surface stain, or another finding. An old filling may need assessment for reasons beyond its color. A new dark area or symptom should be examined rather than hidden with a cosmetic product.
Coordinate the sequence
If whitening and replacement of a visible filling are both being considered, discuss their order and the timing of shade selection. The dentist can explain what improvement is realistic and which parts of the smile would remain unchanged. A carefully planned result may involve more than one decision. Repeatedly bleaching the surrounding teeth can make a restoration stand out more, even when the natural teeth themselves become lighter.
