Whitening and Uneven Color Near the Gumline
Teeth can look different near the gums than at their biting edges. Root exposure, natural tooth structure, deposits, and restorations can all influence that appearance. An uneven shade does not automatically mean that whitening needs to be stronger or applied more frequently.
Identify the surfaces
Ask the dentist to explain what you are seeing, particularly if the darker area is new or sensitive. A photograph cannot reliably distinguish every cause. Whitening will not lighten crowns and fillings like natural teeth, and exposed areas may respond differently or be more sensitive.
Plan around the findings
Discuss realistic improvement and whether another issue needs treatment first. Do not aim whitening gel directly at a sore gumline or scrub the area with an acidic mixture. If whitening is appropriate, follow the product instructions and seek advice for troublesome sensitivity. Understanding which surfaces create the color difference is more useful than repeatedly treating the entire smile and hoping every area will eventually become identical in shade.
