Whitening and Existing Dental Work: Plan for Color Differences
Natural teeth and dental restorations do not respond to whitening in the same way. Crowns, veneers, and fillings generally keep their existing color while natural enamel becomes lighter. This can create a mismatch that was not noticeable before treatment.
Review the visible restorations first
Tell your dentist which teeth or fillings concern you. A cleaning may remove surface stain, but it does not change the underlying shade of a restoration. Do not keep applying bleach to a crown in an effort to make it match.
Sequence treatment thoughtfully
If both whitening and restorative work are being considered, the dentist can explain an appropriate order and when to select a final shade. Replacement of sound dental work is a separate decision that should include its risks and benefits. Atlantic Dental Associates can evaluate the teeth and discuss realistic options. Planning ahead helps avoid an unexpected color difference and keeps the conversation centered on oral health as well as appearance.
