When a Sleep Appliance Irritates Your Gums
A prescribed oral sleep appliance should be reviewed if it creates a sore area or persistent gum irritation. The cause may involve fit, hygiene, or a change in the mouth. Continuing to tolerate a sore spot without advice can make using the device increasingly difficult.
Describe the contact point
Tell the treating clinician where it rubs, when the soreness began, and whether dental work or a fit change occurred recently. Bring the appliance to the visit. Do not file, heat, or bend it yourself, because changing one area may affect its fit or intended function elsewhere.
Coordinate any interruption in use
If the appliance treats sleep apnea, ask the healthcare team what to do while it is being assessed rather than substituting an unrelated mouthpiece. Follow the cleaning directions and avoid harsh chemicals that may damage the device or irritate tissues. Report bleeding, swelling, or an ulcer that persists. Comfort and oral health are part of maintaining treatment, and a fit problem deserves a specific response rather than assuming that discomfort must be accepted for the appliance to work.
