What a Bed Partner Can Note About Nighttime Breathing

A bed partner’s observations can help start a conversation about possible sleep apnea. Snoring alone does not establish the diagnosis, but pauses in breathing, gasping, and repeated awakenings deserve medical attention. The person experiencing them may be unaware that these events occur during the night.

Record patterns rather than conclusions

Note what was observed and how often it seems to happen. Include daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, or trouble concentrating if the person reports them. A simple written account may be easier to discuss than a general description of poor sleep. Consumer recordings or apps should not be treated as substitutes for a clinical evaluation or a prescribed sleep study.

Discuss a route to assessment

Share the observations with a medical clinician, and tell the dentist if there are related concerns such as dry mouth or jaw discomfort. A dental appliance is one possible treatment for selected patients after appropriate evaluation. Do not choose an appliance solely because it quiets snoring. Improving the sound does not by itself establish that breathing during sleep is adequately treated.
