Sleep Apnea Evaluation When You Live Alone
Living alone can make it harder to know whether you snore or pause breathing overnight. The absence of a witness does not rule out sleep apnea. Daytime sleepiness, unrefreshing sleep, morning headaches, or other concerns are enough to begin a conversation with a medical clinician.
Bring what you do know
Describe your sleep schedule, awakenings, health conditions, and medicines. Mention any observations made during a previous trip or hospital stay. You do not need to arrange for someone to monitor you before requesting an evaluation.
Use testing appropriately
Your clinician can determine whether sleep testing is needed and which kind is suitable. Consumer devices may provide observations, but they do not replace diagnosis. If sleep apnea is identified and an oral appliance is considered, a dental assessment can help evaluate that treatment option. Avoid selecting a snoring product simply because it can be ordered privately. The important step is an appropriate medical assessment of breathing and symptoms, even when no partner is available to describe your nights.
