Saving a Broken Tooth Fragment for the Dentist
If a tooth chips, a recovered fragment can be useful to the dentist. Whether it can be used depends on the fracture and the condition of the remaining tooth. Finding the piece should not delay seeking care for significant pain, bleeding, or other injuries after a fall or collision.
Handle the piece carefully
Place the fragment in a clean container and bring it to the appointment. Avoid trying to glue it back yourself or scraping either broken surface. Contact the office to describe the injury and ask how to transport the piece. Mention if the tooth is sensitive or if a sharp edge is cutting your tongue or cheek.
Protect the injured area
Avoid chewing on the damaged tooth while you await instructions. The dentist will assess more than the visible chip, including the bite and the possibility of deeper injury. If there was a head injury, loss of consciousness, or trouble breathing, seek medical care immediately. Even a small fragment can accompany damage that requires professional assessment rather than a cosmetic repair alone.
