Root Canal Treatment: Ask About Returning to Normal Chewing
After root canal treatment, relief from pain may tempt you to resume chewing normally right away. The appropriate restrictions depend on the tooth, the stage of treatment, and the restoration in place. Ask for instructions before leaving rather than using comfort as the only guide.
Clarify the next stage
Find out whether the tooth still has a temporary filling and when the definitive restoration is planned. Some teeth need additional protection, and the treating clinicians should explain how that applies to you. Confirm which office is responsible for the next appointment.
Report problems with use
Contact the team if the bite feels high, a substantial piece of material comes out, or symptoms worsen. Do not test the tooth with hard foods to see whether it is strong enough. A tooth can feel much better while still needing completion of its restorative care. Returning to ordinary function should follow the clinical plan, including the restoration and any relevant follow-up, rather than relying solely on the disappearance of the original toothache.
