Root Canal Treatment and the Temporary Filling Between Visits
A temporary filling can protect a tooth while root canal treatment or its restoration is still in progress. It is part of a treatment sequence, not proof that the tooth is ready for unrestricted chewing. Follow the instructions provided for that specific tooth.
Ask what comes next
Before leaving, confirm whether more endodontic treatment is planned, when the temporary restoration will be replaced, and who will provide the final restoration. Different teeth may need different protective designs. Understanding the next appointment prevents a comfortable tooth from being mistaken for completed care.
Report a change in the seal
Contact the treating office if a substantial piece comes out, the tooth breaks, or the bite feels unexpectedly high. Do not pack the opening with household materials or continue chewing hard foods there. A temporary filling is intended to serve for a limited period, and delays can complicate protection of the tooth. Keep the follow-up even if the original pain has improved and the temporary material appears intact.
