Root Canal Treatment and the Question of Antibiotics
People sometimes expect an antibiotic prescription to settle every painful tooth problem. When the pulp inside a tooth is inflamed or infected, ask the dentist to explain the treatment needed for the source of the problem. A prescription and treatment inside the tooth serve different purposes, and one is not automatically a replacement for the other.
Clarify the reason for each step
Ask what the examination shows, whether root canal treatment is recommended, and what the immediate plan is for pain or swelling. Share your medical history and medication allergies. If an antibiotic is prescribed, follow the clinician’s instructions rather than saving leftovers for a future toothache.
Know whom to contact afterward
Request guidance about symptoms that need reassessment and how to obtain help outside ordinary office hours. Worsening facial swelling or fever needs prompt professional assessment; difficulty breathing or swallowing requires emergency medical care. Understanding why a procedure is needed can make the plan less confusing than judging its completeness by whether a prescription appears on the visit summary.
