Root Canal Therapy: Separating Myths from Facts

Root Canal Therapy: Separating Myths from Facts

Root canal treatment is intended to treat diseased or damaged tissue inside a tooth and preserve the tooth when possible. Fear often comes from confusing the pain of the original problem with the treatment used to address it.

Saving a tooth requires evaluation

The dentist examines the tooth, reviews symptoms, and uses appropriate tests and imaging. A root canal is not necessary for every toothache, and not every damaged tooth can be saved. Cracks, the amount of remaining tooth structure, and gum support can affect the recommendation.

Treatment is followed by restoration

During treatment, the root canal system is cleaned, shaped, and sealed. Local anesthesia is used to manage comfort, and you should tell the provider if you feel discomfort during the procedure. The tooth then needs a suitable final restoration, which may include a crown. Continue brushing, cleaning between teeth, and attending examinations afterward. Atlantic Dental Associates can assess symptoms and explain whether root canal treatment, a different procedure, or referral is appropriate for the specific tooth.
