Preventive Visits Should Include a Sore Area That Will Not Heal

A persistent sore area in the mouth deserves assessment, even if your next planned visit was only for preventive care. Tell the dental team before the appointment rather than assuming it will be noticed during cleaning. Some concerns may need a different evaluation or earlier visit.

Explain the timeline

Describe how long the area has been present, whether it changes, and whether it bleeds or interferes with eating. Mention tobacco use, irritation from an appliance, and any other symptoms. A photograph may document a change, but it does not replace examination.

Avoid repeated irritation

Do not scrape the area, burn it with chemicals, or keep trying remedies that make it sore. The dentist can assess possible causes and decide whether monitoring, treatment, or referral is appropriate. Many oral lesions have benign explanations, but persistence should still be taken seriously. Preventive dentistry includes paying attention to soft tissues as well as teeth, particularly when a change does not settle as expected.
