Dental Cleanings During Orthodontic Treatment Still Matter

Dental Cleanings During Orthodontic Treatment Still Matter

Wearing braces or aligners does not put preventive dental care on hold. Orthodontic reviews focus on tooth movement, while dental examinations and cleanings assess other aspects of oral health. Ask how the appointments should be coordinated during active treatment.

Mention areas that are hard to reach

Brackets, attachments, and crowded spaces can make cleaning more complicated. Show the hygienist where plaque collects or where flossing feels difficult. A different tool or a demonstration may help you clean without damaging the appliance or injuring the gums.

Watch for changes between visits

White-looking areas near brackets, frequent bleeding, or sensitivity deserve attention. They should not be dismissed as inevitable parts of orthodontics. Follow the prescribed appliance instructions and continue fluoride brushing and interdental cleaning. If you use removable trays, clean the teeth before replacing them as directed and maintain the trays appropriately. Tooth position is one part of the goal; healthy enamel and gums are another. Keeping both types of follow-up helps identify problems while the appliance is still in use rather than discovering them after treatment is finished.
