Bonding or a Veneer for One Small Chip?
A small front-tooth chip may lead to a discussion of bonding, a veneer, or another approach. The most suitable option depends on the damage, the bite, and how much healthy tooth remains. The size of the visible defect is only part of that assessment.
Compare what changes
Bonding can add tooth-colored material to a selected area. A veneer changes a larger portion of the visible surface and may require irreversible enamel preparation. Both need appropriate planning and can require maintenance. Neither is protected from habits such as biting hard objects or grinding.
Ask about the reason for the chip
An isolated injury and continuing wear create different concerns. Tell your dentist about repeated breakage, jaw symptoms, and any recent impact. If the tooth’s pulp or deeper structure may be affected, the evaluation needs to address that before appearance alone. Ask what repair would involve if the restoration later chips. A clear comparison should explain why one option fits your particular defect instead of assuming that a more extensive cosmetic procedure is always the better choice.
