A Nightguard Needs Review When Your Bite Feels Different

A bite that seems different after wearing a nightguard should be discussed with the prescribing dentist, particularly if the sensation persists or comes with pain. Do not assume that a change proves the guard is working or that it is harmless simply because the appliance was made professionally.

Describe the duration

Explain whether the bite returns to normal quickly or stays altered through the day. Mention jaw soreness, loose teeth, recent dental treatment, and any adjustment you made yourself. Bring the appliance so the dentist can inspect it and assess the fit.

Avoid reshaping it at home

Heating, trimming, or grinding a guard can alter its contacts and make the problem harder to evaluate. Ask for instructions about use while awaiting the review. Appliances have different purposes, and a guard intended to protect teeth from grinding is not interchangeable with a sleep apnea device. Follow-up should address both your symptoms and the appliance itself rather than judging its suitability solely by whether the teeth look less worn.
