A Lost Tooth Fragment Is Different from a Knocked-Out Tooth
A chip and a completely knocked-out tooth require different handling, so explain exactly what you see when calling for urgent care. A whole permanent tooth may have a root attached; a fragment is only part of the tooth. If you are unsure, say so and seek immediate professional guidance.
Do not delay a knocked-out permanent tooth
It needs urgent dental attention and should be kept moist. Handle it by the crown, avoiding the root, and follow the clinician’s instructions. Milk or an appropriate tooth-preservation product can be useful if immediate reinsertion is not possible. Never reinsert a baby tooth.
Bring what you have
Save a fragment in a clean container and bring it to the visit. Do not scrub, glue, or file pieces to test how they fit. Describe the injury, bleeding, pain, and any change in the bite. Serious facial or head injuries may require emergency medical care as well as dental evaluation. Clear identification helps the team give advice that matches the actual injury.
