A Gum Bump Beside a Tooth Needs an Examination

A small bump on the gum can be easy to dismiss, particularly if it drains and becomes less noticeable. It can have several causes, including a pathway associated with infection near a tooth. The absence of severe pain does not establish that the area is healthy.

Show the location

Arrange a dental visit and point out where the bump appears. A photograph can be useful if it changes before the appointment, but it cannot replace examination. Mention drainage, a bad taste, prior root canal treatment, or a history of injury to nearby teeth.

Avoid squeezing it

Do not puncture the bump or try to treat it with leftover antibiotics. The dentist may need to assess the tooth, surrounding gums, and appropriate images to determine the source. Swelling that spreads, fever, or feeling unwell requires prompt attention; breathing or swallowing difficulty is an emergency. Treatment decisions should follow the diagnosis, even if the bump temporarily disappears and the tooth has never produced a memorable toothache.
