A Dark Line Near a Filling Needs Assessment Before Whitening

A dark area beside a filling may be staining, a restoration edge, decay, or another change. Its appearance alone does not establish the cause. Whitening the surrounding tooth is not a reliable way to find out what is happening at that margin.

Tell the dentist what changed

Mention whether the line is new, whether food catches there, and whether floss shreds. Include sensitivity or pain, but do not wait for discomfort before asking about a visible change. An examination and appropriate imaging may help assess the area.

Keep cosmetic and health questions together

If the filling is healthy but its color bothers you, discuss the tradeoffs of replacement and alternatives. Existing restorative materials do not bleach like natural teeth. If another problem is identified, it should guide the next step before a whitening routine is started. Avoid scraping the line or applying stronger product locally. A useful plan begins with the condition of the tooth and restoration, then considers whether a color change is appropriate and what maintenance that decision would involve.
