A Crown Margin You Can Feel With Your Tongue

The tongue can detect very small changes in a tooth’s surface. Feeling an edge near a crown does not automatically mean the restoration has failed, but a new or changing sensation deserves assessment. The dentist can determine whether the contour is expected or whether there is damage, decay, or another concern.

Notice associated changes

Mention whether floss catches, food lodges nearby, or the gum bleeds. Tell the team if the edge appeared suddenly after biting something hard. Avoid repeatedly scraping the spot with a fingernail or using a sharp object to test whether the crown is loose.

Let the examination guide repair

An apparent edge may require monitoring, cleaning advice, adjustment, or treatment depending on its cause. A photograph alone may not show the condition beneath or beside a restoration. Keep normal gentle cleaning while arranging an appointment and seek prompt advice if the crown moves or the tooth hurts. The useful question is how the crown fits and functions now, rather than whether every surface feels completely identical to natural enamel.
