A Cracked Filling May Be a Sign to Review Bite Forces
A filling can crack or loosen for different reasons, including wear, decay around its edges, or heavy forces on the tooth. Replacing the material without considering the surrounding tooth and bite may miss part of the problem.
Describe when the discomfort occurs
Tell your dentist about pain during biting, sensitivity, food trapping, and any habit of clenching or grinding. Mention whether you have broken dental work before. A crack in a restoration and a crack in the tooth are different findings and may require different treatment.
Let the examination guide the repair
The dentist evaluates remaining tooth structure and may recommend a new filling, a covering restoration, or another approach. A protective appliance may be discussed if excessive forces are contributing, but it is not the answer in every case. Avoid hard foods on a painful or broken area while arranging care. Atlantic Dental Associates can assess the restoration and help you understand both the repair and the steps that may reduce future damage.
