A Clear Aligner Attachment That Feels Rough

Small tooth-colored attachments may be used with clear aligners to help guide planned movements. If an attachment feels rough, comes off, or seems different, contact the treating office. Your tongue may notice a minor surface change very strongly, but you should not file it down or remove it yourself.

Describe function as well as sensation

Tell the team whether the aligner still seats as instructed and whether the roughness is irritating your cheek or tongue. Mention which tooth is involved and when you first noticed it. If an attachment has detached, follow the office’s instructions rather than assuming it is unimportant or trying to glue it back.

Keep the prescribed sequence

Ask whether to continue the current tray while waiting for an assessment. Do not jump to another aligner to see if it feels better. Attachments and trays are parts of an individualized treatment plan, so changes should be evaluated within that plan. Prompt communication gives the clinician a chance to address comfort and fit before you begin making compensating changes at home.
